DO have evidence, such as your own notes, attendance records and customer feedback, to back up your ratings. Examples can support praise or criticism, and can defuse feelings of anger or frustration.

Don’t be swayed by recent events; you’re evaluating the entire appraisal period.

DO rate job performance based on specific behaviors, not attitude. Statements about attitude are difficult to back up.

Don’t surprise your employee with bad news. Problems should have been addressed when they occurred.

DO have your employee sign the appraisal form so you have proof of acknowledgment.

Don’t forget to make a copy of the form for the employee.

DO store this form in a secure place, because the information is confidential.

Don’t do all the talking. Invite feedback throughout the performance appraisal, and encourage open conversation. DO consider having employees complete self-appraisals. This will give you a good idea of how they think they’re performing.
