Minimum Wage Changes Stem from Federal Inaction

The flurry of local legislative activity is the result of a lack of action on the federal level. With the federal minimum wage rate stagnant at $7.25 since 2009, local lawmakers have stepped in to fill the void. The result is a patchwork of varying minimum wage rates across the country.

According to The Hartford, 66 percent of small businesses surveyed support an overall increase in federal minimum wage. Federal inaction has definitely NOT stopped states and cities from enacting their own minimum wage increases, many which go into effect this year. Examples include:

  • Cook County, IL — $10 hour
  • Flagstaff, AZ — $10.50 an hour
  • Los Angeles County — $12 an hour ($10.50 for employers with 25 or fewer employees)
  • Maryland — $9.25 an hour
  • Montgomery County, MD — $11.50 an hour
  • Oregon — $10.25 an hour ($10 for rural counties)
  • Pasadena, CA — $12 for larger employers ($10.50 for smaller employers)
  • Portland, OR — $11.25 an hour for metropolitan area
  • San Francisco — $14 an hour
  • San Jose — $12 an hour
  • Washington, DC — $12.50 an hour
